Give First
2020.10.09 — Week 41 — Thoughts Afloat
“Get back on track ASAP.”
Give first.
This is an elaboration on one of the values I believe to be true.
At times, giving first might not lead to anything. But more often than not, it comes back around.
The difficulty with the practical implementation of what’s mentioned below is getting past the initial resistance to not do it.
This resistance could sometimes be rational; but most other times, it is simply fear, well dressed in the form of ego. Fear of how we are perceived, of what people think about us or of what they might say about us after we leave.
But still, give first. Be the first one:
- to make eye contact
- to smile
- to say hello
- to offer to help
- to extend a hand for a handshake
- to offer your seat to someone in need
- to offer a genuine heartfelt compliment
- to share your piece of the pie
- to share credit with the team during victory
- to volunteer if the presenter asks for one
- to say “you’re probably right” in menial arguments
- to bring a solution and not dwell on the problem
Closing Thoughts
Yes, the points above are not applicable at all moments in life. So take it with a pinch of salt.
If you have one of your own “give first-s”, do share. Would love to know! 🙂
